Palencia's Romanesque art

Frómista, Carrión de los Condes and Aguilar de Campoo: a province with one of Europe's largest concentrations of Romanesque art.

Area: Frómista, Carrión y Aguilar de Campoo

Palencia province is considered one of the largest concentrations of Romanesque art in Europe. Churches and chapels are everywhere, many of them in tiny villages.

Three essential stops

  • San Martín de Frómista, from the late 11th century, a balanced and very well-preserved Romanesque church on the Camino de Santiago.
  • Carrión de los Condes, with churches and the monastery of San Zoilo, also on the Camino.
  • Aguilar de Campoo, with the monastery of Santa María la Real and a surrounding area of villages with Romanesque churches.

To explore it properly, link several stops into a one- or two-day route and combine it with the Canal de Castilla.
