What to eat in Palencia

Roast lamb, menestra, beans, cheeses and Cigales wines: garden-fresh cooking and wood-fired roasts.

Area: Toda la provincia

Palencia cuisine combines the vegetable gardens of the riverbanks with the tradition of wood-fired roasts.

  • Roast lamb (lechazo), the star dish. In the Cerrato area there is even a saying: “lechazo and cheese taste like a kiss”.
  • Menestra palentina, a seasonal vegetable dish.
  • Beans, partridge and pulses, from the winter kitchen.
  • Cheeses from sheep and cows of the province.
  • Wines: the Cigales wine area, famous for its clarete and rosé wines, extends into the province.

In the mountains, grill houses also serve local meats and mushroom dishes in season. See Where to eat for specific places.
